SCOTTISH HEALTH SURVEY TOPIC REPORT: EQUALITY GROUPS
31st October 2012
Written by Paul Whybrow, Julie Ramsay, Karen MacNee, the above National Statistics
Publication for Scotland looks at the health and wellbeing of Scottish people according
to gender, disability, religion, sexual orientation and ethnicity. Here are the findings
in relation to the health topic and sexual orientation:
General health and mental wellbeing
People who self-reported as bisexual reported poorer self-assessed health and lower mental
wellbeing while the self-assessed health and mental wellbeing of gay men and lesbians was
not significantly different from the average.
Respondents who identified themselves as bisexual were less likely to report being in good
or very good health than the national average (68% compared with 76%). Those who self-
identified as 'other' sexual orientation and those who chose not to provide details on
their sexual orientation were the least likely to assess their health as good or very
good, significantly less than the average. There was no significant difference between
those who identified as heterosexual or as gay or lesbian in terms of self-assessed health.
Heterosexual respondents had significantly higher mental wellbeing (mean WEMWBS score of 50.0),
than bisexual respondents (47.9), those with other sexual orientations (47.0) and those that preferred not to disclose their sexual orientation (47.3). The mental wellbeing of gay men and lesbians (48.8) was not significantly different from the average.
Bisexual respondents were more likely to have a high GHQ12 score (23%) than heterosexuals
(15%). Gay men and lesbians (16%) were not significantly different from the average.
Alcohol Consumption
Respondents who identified themselves as lesbian or gay were significantly more likely to
drink at hazardous or harmful levels than the national average.
Respondents who identified themselves as lesbian or gay (34%) were significantly more likely
to drink at hazardous or harmful levels than the average (23%). They were also more likely
to exceed daily limits (50%) as were those who identified themselves as bisexual (49%)
when compared to the average (39%). There was no significant difference in alcohol
consumption between non-heterosexual groups, although gay and lesbian respondents had the
highest levels of both hazardous/harmful drinking and exceeding daily limits.
This corroborates with other research that found that lesbians and gay men may be at
increased risk due to high levels of drinking and smoking.
Those who preferred not to answer the question on sexuality were significantly less likely
to exceed daily limits and drink at hazardous / harmful levels than those who identified
themselves as heterosexual, gay, lesbian or bisexual.
Smoking
Smoking prevalence among bisexual, gay and lesbian respondents was not significantly
different from that among heterosexuals.
Self-identified bisexual (27%) and gay and lesbian respondents (28%) had a slightly higher
smoking prevalence than heterosexuals, but the difference was not significant. Those who
self-identified as having an 'other' sexual orientation were significantly more likely to
smoke than heterosexual respondents (36% compared to 24%). Those who preferred not to answer
the question on sexual orientation also had significantly higher smoking prevalence (33%).
Gay and lesbian smokers smoked significantly more than the national average (17.8 compared with
14.2 cigarettes per day). Bisexual smokers started smoking at 15.9 years old on average,
significantly younger than heterosexual smokers (17.5 years).
Dental health
Respondents who preferred not to disclose their sexual orientation, and those who reported
their sexuality as 'other' were significantly less likely to have 20 or more natural teeth
than the national average.
There were no significant differences in the proportion of heterosexual, lesbian and gay, or
bisexual respondents who had 20 or more teeth. Those who preferred not to disclose their
sexual orientation, and those who reported their sexuality as 'other' were significantly
less likely to have 20 or more natural teeth than the national average, with 61% and 60%
respectively. There was no significant association between toothache and sexual orientation.
Diet
A significantly lower proportion of those who reported their sexual orientation as 'other' and
those that preferred not to answer the question ate the recommended quantities of fruit and
vegetables than the national average.
Respondents who identified themselves as lesbian or gay were the most likely to have eaten
5 or more portions of fruit and vegetables on the day prior to interview (28%) and had the
highest mean daily portions (3.7), although this wasn't significantly different from the
national average (22%, 3.2 portions). A significantly lower proportion of those who reported
their sexual orientation as 'other' and those that preferred not to answer the question
(both 15%) ate the recommended quantities of fruit and vegetables than the national average.
These two groups also ate the lowest number of daily portions on average (both 2.7).
Physical activity
People who identified as other sexual orientation were least likely to meet the physical
activity recommendations.
Respondents who identified as having an 'other' sexual orientation were significantly less
likely to meet the physical activity recommendations than the national average (29% did so
compared to a national average of 38%). There was a similar pattern in relation to sport
participation where 39% of respondents who identified as other sexual orientation and those
who preferred not to answer the sexual orientation question did sport in the previous 4
weeks compared to a national average of 49%. Bisexual, lesbian and gay respondents were not
significantly different from heterosexuals in relation to sport and physical activity.
Overweight and obesity
There was no significant association between sexual orientation and the prevalence of
overweight or obesity.
Cardiovascular and diabetes
There was no association between sexual orientation and prevalence of CVD conditions.
Respondents who self-identified as gay or lesbian had a significantly lower prevalence of
diabetes (2%) than the national average (5%).

HOW TO 'COME AROUND' TO YOUR KID COMING OUT
23rd October 2012
A new book written by Anne Dohrenwend a Professor in counselling psychology has just been
published aimed at helping parents to accept their children when they come out as lesbian,
gay, bisexual or transgender. Dr Dohrenwend gives the following tips for parents:
How to communicate that, whatever your child's sexual orientation, you will never withdraw
your love.
Don't try to change your child. It is unproductive to force children to be something that
they are not.
Take a stance against discrimination and hate. Parents of LGBTQ children don't need to march
in parades or be active politically, but they should take a stance against discrimination.
Don't give uninvited advice. Dohrenwend suggests that a good way to parent any child,
especially an adult child, is to give less and less advice that isn't asked for. Respecting
boundaries is important.
Get to know your child's friends and partner, and try to make them feel comfortable in your
home. This is how parents of LGBTQ children can make sure their children stay near them and
the communication lines stay open.

Of course, there are more LGBTs than this. But what I find absolutely fascinating is that
BME people are more likely to be out; women are more likely to be out; and poor people are
more likely to be out. Could it be the more privileges you have the more you are frightened
of losing them? It also begs the question why is it that the most visible group within the

This is the second local CAMHS partnership to provide mental health support for LGBT young

be brilliant if CAMHS partnerships around the country followed these examples. Sadly, some
places have homophobic commissioners who would rather stop support for LGBT youth.

binge drink and take drugs than women in the general population. However, within the age
ranges, young lesbian and bisexual women were disproportionately represented in the high
rates of drinking, smoking, illicit drug use and mental health distress. The authors state
there is a clear need to support these young women and recommend programmes aimed at
improving the social and emotional wellbeing of this group, including strategies around
