The Equality Act 2010
The new Equality Act became law in October 2010. This new law brings together all previous equality legislation. As from April 2011 a further part of the act will become law, the Public Sector Duty. Click here to access a power point presentation which outlines the Public Sector Duty.
The Equality and Human Rights Commission's report How Fair is Britain was published in October 2010. It included some damning findings from a report by the National Foundation for Educational Research which shows that LGBT young people are the most bullied group in school and the least supported. Click here to access the full report. Schools have clearly got a lot of catching up to do with regard to sexual orientation and gender identity.
As from April 2011 all schools have to proactively eliminate discrimination, harassment, victimisation; tackle prejudice, and promote understanding; remove or minimise disadvantages; foster good relations; and advance equality of opportunity for all equality strands including sexual orientation and gender identity.
